Soccer Coaching Tool Improves Kicking Skills

UK Trade & Investment Press Release NP21/06 Tuesday, May 02, 2006

A new soccer coaching tool provides soccer coaches and players with instant, accurate data on kicking performance.

For the first-time, ball speed, elevation and 3D spin can be captured using the measurement system to provide data on every aspect of a player's ability, says its British manufacturer Sports Dynamics Ltd. All information is displayed on a PC for quick analysis.

The QuinSpin system, for both indoor and outdoor sports analysis, was developed by the company, a spin-out from Loughborough University in the English Midlands, which is acclaimed for its sports research programs.

The system's sensors are triggered the moment the ball is kicked, instantly capturing the ball's flight characteristics, as well as slow motion video of the player striking the ball. QuinSpin software provides instantaneous measurement of ball velocity, elevation (launch angle) and ball spin. The ball spin section provides accurate information on rate of spin and 3D spin axis.

In order to assess kicking technique, an additional "playercam" can be positioned to the side, behind or in front of the player. The QuinSpin software automatically captures and stores a short video of the kicking action as the ball is struck. Playback can be at different speeds, including frame-by-frame, allowing the coach to relate the ball flight measurement data to the player's kicking technique. Using a navigational panel, video film clips can be saved for future reference or played simultaneously to compare different kicks or even different players.

"QuinSpin allows players and coaches to accurately and objectively measure ball striking ability, as well as analyzing technique to improve all aspects of kicking," says Dr Paul Neilson, director of Sports Dynamics. "Importantly, players' performance can be monitored during periods of rehabilitation to determine their return to form and fitness after serious injury."

Other benefits include being able to compare preferred and non-preferred kicking performance, charting a player's progress over time, and comparing player information in order to assess relative free-kick taking ability.

New Style Tray for Serving Drinks Safely

UK Trade & Investment Press Release NP25/06 Tuesday, July 11, 2006

An innovative new tray has been designed specifically for serving drinks in stemmed glasses. It is said to reduce breakages and spillages by around 90%, meaning caterers can eliminate the expensive need to replace glassware and beverages when accidents happen.

Designed by Richard Siddle, a former butler at a top London hotel and now a contract caterer, the Siddle Safe Tray, is manufactured and marketed exclusively by British company Continental Chef Supplies Ltd. Unlike conventional trays, where the glasses are balanced - often precariously - on the top of a tray, the Siddle Safe Tray is designed so that the stems of the glasses hang beneath the tray, while the bowls of the glasses rest securely on it.

There are two parts to the product: a base tray for positioning and filling the glasses; and a slotted top tray for carrying them.

Once the glasses are positioned correctly on the base tray, they are filled and slid on to the top tray through the slots. The top tray can then be lifted and carried away. With the base ready for reloading, the whole operation can be carried out again with another top tray.

"With the glasses positioned in the top tray, they cannot be accidentally knocked over," says Valda Goodfellow, joint managing director of Continental Chef Supplies. "As the design actually balances the glasses, the tray makes for greater stability where the ground is uneven or where there may be sudden movement, such as on a cruise liner or an airplane."

She adds: "The real benefits of the tray are seen when you realize how much you save on glass and champagne replacements. When a tray of champagne is knocked over, for example, all the drink and glassware may be lost, which potentially could cost more than $150."

The Siddle Safe Tray is available in two sizes, accommodating six glasses or 12. Top trays and bases are available in black acrylic or dark wood.

The company would welcome inquiries from potential agents or distributors.

British-Style Finishing School Offers A Touch Of Class

UkKTrade & Investment Press Release NP28/06 Thursday, July 27, 2006

The finishing school - the last word in the traditional British way of polishing the social skills of young people before they step out into society - is opening its doors to students abroad, both male and female, of all ages.

Adapted to the requirements of the modern world, new courses from The Finishing Academy, based in the United Kingdom, focus on personal image, etiquette, and style, by providing adults, as well as high school graduates, with an opportunity to hone their communication and presentation skills. The techniques taught can help people further their careers and give them the confidence to strengthen relationships, says the academy.

The Finishing Academy was created by Diana Mather and Penny Edge, who both have considerable experience of providing personal development training. Diana is a former BBC Breakfast TV presenter who has coached Ministers of Parliament, businesspeople, and TV presenters; and Penny is a personal trainer, qualified in neuro-linguistic programming and mentoring.

The academy says it originally ran courses for young ladies, but courses for teenage boys and adults are now in demand.

Topics covered on the two- or five-day courses have been carefully designed to get people thinking more positively, communicating more effectively, and moving with greater poise and elegance. They range from traditional deportment and etiquette, through to essential skills for modern-day living such as career counseling, first aid, self-defense, and even essential car maintenance.

Confidence building

"Many skills are taught to boost confidence and help those participating to feel at ease in any situation. Professional consultants and trainers are used in everything from deportment to dining, giving presentations, and public speaking," says Penny Edge, director of The Finishing Academy. "Our courses enable people to make the most of themselves, and techniques taught are proven to be beneficial in all aspects of life, rather than being focused purely on career or business needs."

Courses in the UK are held at exclusive venues such as Willington Hall, set in 17 acres of formal gardens with views over English countryside to the distant Welsh mountains; and Combermere Abbey, a complex of medieval and 16th-century buildings set in tranquil surroundings and overlooking a 143-acre lake.

The next course held overseas will be in New York. Further details can be obtained from Rebecca Shelby: rebeccashelby@optonline.net. Other courses overseas will be posted on The Finishing Academy web site, www.finishing-academy.co.uk, in the near future.
